Which is better, body butter or lotion?

Looking for a way to moisturize your skin, but not sure if body butter or lotion is better? The short answer is it depends. Both styles will offer moisturizing properties, however if you are focused on using natural ingredients, want to apply less often, or have particularly dry skin – body butter is likely the way to go.

Lotions typically contain more heavily processed ingredients (though there are exceptions to this rule) and will be lighter for more frequent application. This is because they are an emulsified formula (meaning water and oil mixed together.) The presence of water makes lotion easier to smooth on the skin, and less greasy. Some of the potential downsides include the need for a preservative, and less moisturizing power.

Body butter is fully oil based with shea butter and cocoa butter being popular ingredients. Since there is no water in the formula, it is not necessary to use a preservative, and this can be a plus for folks with particularly sensitive skin. The lack of water also means stronger moisturizing properties. Some brands may leave skin with a greasy feeling after application, however there are formulas that include ingredients to combat a greasy finish. As you might have guessed, Wizzyband is one of those brands.

Body butters are more likely to focus on eco friendly ingredients and vegan formulas, though this is not a hard and fast rule. Additionally, body butter is less likely to spill when you toss it into a purse. This is because lotion will stay in a liquid form at all temperatures, while body butter is a solid at room temperature. When it touches your skin, body heat is enough to melt the formula and make it easy to apply.

So which is the right choice? It’s truly up to you. For us, the deep hydration and easy travel keeps us firmly on team body butter.
